Buying art online: original paintings, prints and folk art
This category covers original paintings, drawings, signed prints, lithographs, etchings, folk art and outsider art from known and unknown artists. Buying art online can be a joy, whether youβre looking for a piece to love on your wall or researching a signature that might belong to someone important, but it rewards buyers who know how to look closely.
What makes art valuable? The artist, the quality of the work, its size and subject, condition, provenance and whether itβs an original or a reproduction all matter. One of the most common questions is how to tell if a painting is an original or a print. Brushstroke texture, canvas and paint edges, and the dot pattern visible under magnification in many printed reproductions can all help. For prints, understanding the difference between a hand-signed limited edition, a plate-signed print and a later reproduction is essential. Watch out for decorative reproductions on textured canvas, forged signatures and exaggerated attributions.
When buying online, ask for close-up photos of the surface, signature and back of the work, including any labels, stamps or gallery stickers. Provenance, such as exhibition records or a documented ownership history, adds confidence for more valuable pieces, and important works by major artists may require expert authentication. Compare recent sold prices for similar works by the same artist. The guides below cover spotting originals versus prints, lithographs and etchings, and folk and outsider art, and youβll find live listings from eBay alongside them.

Art: common questions
How can you tell if a painting is an original or a print?+
Look closely with a magnifier. Original paintings usually show raised brushstrokes, uneven paint thickness and paint that wraps around canvas edges. Many printed reproductions reveal a regular dot pattern under magnification, and some have artificial texture added on top. Check the back as well, since original canvases and boards often show age, stretcher details and labels consistent with the work.
Is a signed print worth anything?+
It depends on the artist, the type of print and whether it was hand-signed. A hand-signed, numbered limited edition by a sought-after artist can be valuable, while a print with a signature reproduced in the printing plate is usually worth much less. Condition, edition size and printing method also matter, so research the specific edition before paying a premium.
What is folk art and outsider art?+
Folk art usually refers to work made by artists outside formal academic training, often rooted in community traditions, such as weathervanes, quilts, carvings and naive paintings. Outsider art generally describes work by self-taught artists working independently of the art world. Both are widely collected, and value depends on the artist, originality, quality and condition.
